The National Park of Isalo detains the best reputation of whole parks of Madagascar. Created in 1962, this “western park” is large of 815Km2 and located by the side of RN7 that connects Tuléar to Antananarivo. It is made of sandstone massif wildly eroded that took different shape such the Queens statute, a boot (ranger’s shoe), etc. The far Wild West landscape attracts hikers to admire the sweeping colors of this Jurassic scenery. The climate is dry tropical with warm temperatures all year around.
Concerning the fauna, there are few species of lemurs that can be spotted. Ring-tailed lemurs, brown lemurs, sifaka and 14 nocturnal lemurs hide in dense vegetation along the streams. The park counts also approximately 80 species of birds, 35 species of reptiles and several endemic frogs.
The flora is indeed more interesting than the fauna. There are several local endemic plants among the 500 species which are found inside Isalo such as the elephant´s foot and some rare palms and aloe species.
Other attractions of the park are the natural swimming pools. One day tour to broadly explore the main attractions starts to the Namaza circuit, dark and blue swimming pools, cascade of nymphs, to ends in the natural swimming pool. A deep exploration of the site takes few days with camping.
Isalo is accessible during all the year. The road is one of the best of Madagascar.
